Hand Towel
A tenugui hand towel folded in the style of a kimono.
Cotton cultivation flourished in Japan during the Samurai period, and “tenugui” was born as a daily necessity out of the scraps from the production of cotton kimono. They were used not only as towels and handkerchiefs, but also for various other purposes, such as covering the head as a sunshade or dust repellent, or ripped into pieces and used as bandages or to repair footwear in an emergency. It can be used at any length according to the purpose, and its cut shape is excellent for quick-drying, making it useful in terms of hygiene. Furthermore, they were loved not only for practical use, but also as a fashion item, and a competition of designs called “Tefu-matching” was held to showcase the best designs.
